Inter Faith Conference in Rome

The Institute of Jainology (IoJ) was invited to participate in a three-day Inter Faith Conference hosted by the Gregorian University in Rome, marking 60 years since the landmark Vatican document Nostra Aetate, which first called for meaningful engagement and dialogue with other faiths. From a UK perspective, the aim was to promote the Jain faith and share Jain perspectives on inter-religious harmony. The trip was facilitated and led by Dr Mehoolbhai Sanghrajka of IoJ, accompanied by a delegation of Jains from the UK and India, including Nileshbhai Kothari representing Veerayatan UK.

Discussions at the conference centred on the continuing impact of Nostra Aetate, achieving progress in interfaith dialogue, and shared goals for the future. In today’s increasingly troubled world, taking time to reflect, renew the focus on dialogue and inclusion, and encourage fresh debate to make dialogue even more relevant is hugely important. From a Jain perspective, Dr Mehoolbhai Sanghrajka proposed that any future interpretation of Nostra Aetate should emphasise shared ethical principles rather than historical differences.

The Jain delegation was also invited to the Vatican for a cultural programme and a mass led by His Holiness the Pope, where they were honoured to be seated just a few metres away as he addressed more than 30,000 people in St Peter’s Square. The warmth shown towards the Jain community at the Vatican stands as a testament to the years of dedicated effort by IoJ, and particularly by Dr Mehoolbhai Sanghrajka.
