We Will Take Veerayatan 50 Years Forward

— Shantilal Mutha

Yesterday, at the Abhay Prabhavana event, revered Tai Ma was bid farewell with national honors. Today, we are sharing our individual experiences and memories of Tai Ma.

I have worked full-time in the public sphere for nearly 40 years. Throughout my career, I have constantly heard the name of Veerayatan. Wherever disasters struck and we worked, Tai Ma was also there serving. Tai Ma showed the nation that a Jain devotee can go to disaster-hit areas, work there, and create permanent, lasting solutions.

The sorrow of Tai Ma’s departure is felt not only throughout India but also abroad. However, should we not strive to carry her dreams forward? We must reflect deeply on this question. Certainly, Tai Ma cannot be replaced. Before us stand the examples of Acharya Rajneesh, Goenkaji, and Sushil Muni.

Yet Veerayatan is different. Revered Upadhyaya Shri Amarmuni Maharaj and the respected Baba Shri Navalmal Firodia Ji gave Tai Ma tremendous support. After Baba’s passing, Abhay Seth has continued to stand firmly by the mission.

Just as Baba gave love to Veerayatan’s associates and devotees across India and abroad, Abhay Seth is extending the same love today.

I met revered Tai Ma at Jain conferences in America, in Bhuj, and in Nepal while accompanying my disciple group. However, my close association with her began only four months ago. Abhay Seth called me and said:

“Shantibhai, we must discuss how Veerayatan should progress over the next 50 years and how it should develop. We need to prepare a strategic plan for this.”

Abhay Seth has such affection and confidence in me that I promised him:

“Do not worry. We will work with full dedication to carry your vision forward.”

Eight months ago, Tai Ma had gone to the dental doctor Sanjay Jain for treatment. I had the opportunity to meet her there. Tai Ma asked me:

“Shantibhai, do you know where I live?”

Holding my ears, I replied:

“Sorry, I also live in Sinhgad (Pune), just like you, but I never had the opportunity to come and meet you.”

Since then, I have had many conversations with Tai Ma, sometimes for an hour, sometimes for two hours. We discussed matters concerning the nation and the world. The joy that appeared on Tai Ma’s face during those conversations was indescribable.

You have all shared memories of her past. I will share with you her vision for the future.

We had decided to celebrate Tai Ma’s 90th birthday and the 75th anniversary of her initiation together in Pune. For that purpose, I had already booked Balewadi. I discussed this with both Tai Ma and Abhay Seth.

At that program, we intended to unveil Veerayatan 2.0. Although Tai Ma is no longer physically with us today, on 26 January 2027, we will organise a grand event to fulfill her dream. People who love Veerayatan from across India and the world will participate. That will be the true tribute to Tai Ma.

We are all committed to this. I thank all the colleagues who said:

“We are pearls strung together in one garland.”

I would like to say that, following the guidance of all the respected colleagues, under the leadership of Abhay Seth and Alok Ji, and with the guidance of the entire Veerayatan team, we will move Veerayatan 2.0 forward in a beautiful manner. We will multiply it a hundredfold.

This is my assurance before all of you and before Abhay Seth.

Mother, your love will always remain with me

- Dr. Ajay Thakkar, Jupiter Hospital, Pune

In the beating of your heart, I have always heard the wish for the welfare of all. Your blessings and the loving touch of your compassionate hand have inspired us to dedicate ourselves to the service of humanity. We will certainly strive to fulfil that inspiration.

From Twelve Years of Silent Spiritual Practice Emerged the Great Movement of Veerayatan

- Shri Naveen Bhandari, Pune

Pujya Tai Ma began her spiritual journey in Kolkata through twelve years of maun sadhana (the practice of silence) and deep study of the Uttaradhyayan Sutra, on which she later wrote a celebrated commentary. This profound spiritual foundation gave rise to the great movement of Veerayatan. Inspired by her vision, the Sadhvi Sangh and Veerayatan grew into a worldwide movement with the wholehearted support of society.

Her life cannot be measured simply by the years she lived, but by the countless lives she touched and the welfare she brought to humanity. Every moment of her life was devoted to love, compassion, and selfless service.

Tai Ma rose above all distinctions of caste and sect. Her vision embraced the welfare of all humanity. She did not merely teach the message of Bhagwan Mahavir - she lived it. Through her words, her actions, and her example, she brought the wisdom of the Uttaradhyayan Sutra and the ideals of Bhagwan Mahavir to people with remarkable depth and clarity. This reflected the breadth of her vision and the farsightedness of her thinking.

Today, her work continues to flourish, and her inspiration continues to guide people across the world.

A Life of Luminous Grace

- Justice Alok Kumar Sinha, Seema Sinha

Farewell to a True disciple of lord Mahavir

With heavy hearts, we honour a woman whose life was not merely a span of years, but a profound act of devotion. Our beloved Tai Ma did not just preach spirituality; she lived it through the blisters on her hands and the tireless compassion in her heart. She understood a fundamental truth that many of us spend lifetimes trying to grasp - that the highest form of prayer is service to humanity.

A Legacy of Healing and Hope

Her impact was not measured in titles or accolades, but in the lives she quietly transformed. She was a sanctuary for those the world often chose to ignore:

  • For the Poor and Needy: She recognised that dignity is as essential as bread. She did not just give charity; she gave respect.
  • For the Sick: She was a source of comfort and healing. Her presence in a hospital room brought a peace that science alone could not provide.
  • For the Student: She was a visionary. She knew that while food sustains the body, education liberates the soul. The schools she established are not just buildings; they are beacons of hope where children are taught that their circumstances do not define their potential.

Carrying the Torch

She often said that spirituality without action is like a lamp without oil. Today, that lamp has passed from her hands into ours.
The greatest tribute we can offer her is found not in our tears or our monuments, but in our willingness to follow her example of kindness. We honour her most when we reach out to the lonely, support those who are struggling, and keep the doors of learning open to all.

"The soul is healed by being with children, and the world is healed by serving the suffering."

She has returned to the source of the light she so brightly reflected. While the world feels a little dimmer today, we are all much brighter for having known her.

Rest in peace, dear Tai Ma. Your work continues in us.

Celebrating a Divine Life – Param Pujya Acharyashri Chandanaji (1937–2026)

- By Institute of Jainology, UK

With deep reverence, the Institute of Jainology shares the news that Param Pujya Acharyashri Chandanaji (Padma Shri), affectionately known as Pujya Tai Ma, passed away peacefully on 22 April 2026.

Acharyashri Chandanaji was a remarkable spiritual leader whose life exemplified compassion, forgiveness, and selfless service. Through her vision and tireless efforts, she brought the teachings of Bhagwan Mahavir into meaningful action, touching and transforming countless lives across the world.

Born on 26 January 1937 as Shakuntala, she displayed an innate sense of compassion and selflessness from an early age. At just 15, she renounced worldly life and embarked on a profound spiritual journey, undertaking 12 years of silence while studying Jain, Buddhist, and Vedic scriptures. During this time, she developed a deep conviction that spirituality must address not only personal liberation but also the alleviation of suffering in everyday life.

In 1973, in the sacred land of Bihar (associated with Bhagwan Mahavir and Lord Buddha) Acharyashri Chandanaji founded Veerayatan. More than an institution, Veerayatan became a movement grounded in the principles of Seva (service), Shiksha (education), and Sadhana (spiritual development), serving people irrespective of caste, religion, gender, or background.

Her work was both visionary and practical. She established healthcare initiatives, including eye hospitals in underserved regions, and created schools and vocational centres for communities affected by natural disasters in India and Nepal. Her “Jaha Jinalay, Vaha Vidyalay” initiative sought to bring education to Jain pilgrimage sites, ensuring that spiritual spaces also became centres of learning and empowerment. She also pioneered the organisation of a structured Sadhvi Sangh, providing education, dignity, and opportunities for women in spiritual life.

Acharyashri Chandanaji’s influence extended globally. In the United Kingdom, her inspiration led to the establishment of Shri Chandana Vidya Peeth (SCVP) over three decades ago, enabling generations to engage with Jain philosophy and values. Through her guidance, the message of Bhagwan Mahavir has reached communities across North America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

Her contributions were widely recognised. She was the first Jain Sadhvi to be conferred the title of Acharyashri and the first to receive the Padma Shri award from the Government of India. In recognition of her extraordinary service to humanity, she was also honoured with a State Funeral.

Reflecting on her life and legacy, Jaysukh Mehta, Director of the Institute of Jainology, said:

“Acharyashri Chandanaji’s life was a profound expression of Jain values in action. Through her unwavering commitment to compassion, education, and service, she demonstrated how spiritual principles can meaningfully transform society. On behalf of the Institute of Jainology and OneJAIN, we offer our deepest tributes and remain committed to carrying forward her vision of selfless service to humanity.”

Beyond her extensive achievements, those who met her remember her humility, serenity, and unwavering dedication. Her life demonstrated that true spirituality is expressed through compassion in action.

While her physical presence is no longer with us, her legacy continues through the institutions she built, the lives she uplifted, and the values she embodied.

The Institute of Jainology offers its deepest respects and gratitude for a life that has made an exceptional contribution to humanity.

I Want to Give a Permanent Form to the Memory of Tai Maharaj

— Shri Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Cabinet Minister, Government of Maharashtra

Offering my reverential salutations at the feet of Bhagwan Mahavir Swami, I bow from my heart to Padmashri Acharya Chandanaji Maharaj Saheb. Today, rather than merely praising her virtues, we should reflect on how we can bring those virtues into our own lives and carry them forward. It is with this purpose that this gathering has been organised on behalf of the Sangh.

Having accepted initiation at the age of fifteen, she became not only India’s first woman Acharya but also the first in the world to attain and be honoured with the position of Acharya within the Jain community. On the very sacred land where she was born, nearly ninety years later, she accepted her final departure from this world. Her work spread across many villages of Maharashtra and throughout India.

When we speak of Veerayatan, a question naturally arises: What is Veerayatan? How does an ordinary person in society benefit from it?

When I visited Sanchore village with Prakashji Kangnu, I was greatly surprised. Near a small village beyond Sanchore stood a Veerayatan school. It was an exceptionally beautiful institution and was being run very efficiently. At that moment, I realised that Maharaj Saheb’s vision was not limited to cities alone but extended equally to villages.

Many people have expressed their feelings in their own ways, so I will keep my remarks brief. On behalf of the Government of Maharashtra and personally, I offer my salutations at her feet and pay my tribute to her.

To the people of VeerayatanJay Bhai and others I would request that you identify a suitable place and tell us how her sacred memory can be permanently commemorated there. Whether it is a memorial square, a monument, or any other form of remembrance, wherever you decide, I will make every effort, in my capacity within the Government of Maharashtra, to help bring it to fruition.

Veerayatan is not merely an organisation; it is a movement. Veerayatan is an idea and a service. The Jain community is known and respected for its commitment to non-violence and compassion. It is said that even those who have no one to inquire about their well-being find care and concern within the Jain community. It also looks after voiceless beings and birds.

I pray that in the years ahead, Veerayatan continues to grow and achieve even greater progress.

Today, seeing the vast impact she has had in this field, nearly 200 schools…. all of this is so extraordinary that I cannot express it in words. Perhaps no one can.

Once again, offering my reverential salutations at her feet, I conclude my remarks.

Jai Jinendra!

Tribute by Paraschand Jain, Trustee, Dadawadi – Patna

When one remembers Bhagwan Mahavir, one also remembers Chandanbala, who fulfilled Bhagwan Mahavir’s difficult vow. That historic Chandanbala found a reflection in Chandanashriji during our own lifetime, as she fulfilled the aspirations of revered Amarmuniji Maharaj.

In the 1960s, revered Amarmuniji Maharaj chose Rajgir, the site of Bhagwan Mahavir’s final Chaturmas, as a place for meditation and spiritual practice. Since 1970, I have had many opportunities to see that great soul seated upon the stone hills of Rajgir. When Tai Ma was a young Sadhvi of about thirty to thirty-two years of age, I witnessed her radiance, which only continued to grow with the passing years. Her arrival at Dadawadi, Patna remains a memorable moment.

Tai Ma’s loving words always attracted people. Every meeting with her brought a unique experience. There were no limits to her vision. The Brahmi Kala Mandir (Museum) stands as a living reflection of her imagination. Her every creation broke old barriers and established new values. Through her extraordinary work, she gave direction to humanity.

The memory of Tai Ma will remain in our hearts throughout our lives and will constantly remind us that she is never truly far from us.

Tribute from Vimal Kumar Jain

The news of the heavenly departure of the revered Acharya Chandana Maharaj Ji, a great Jain Sadhvi and a living embodiment of renunciation, austerity, and service, adorned with the Padma Shri award, is deeply sorrowful.

Your entire life was illuminated by the lofty ideals of non-violence, compassion, spiritual practice, and service to humanity. Through your spiritual practice, you inspired not only the Jain community but all of humanity.

Your departure for the heavenly abode is an irreparable loss, the void of which can never be filled. The path and ideals shown by you will forever inspire us to advance on the way of truth, self-restraint, and service to suffering humanity.

Tribute from Shravan Kumar, Minister for Rural Development, Bihar

The founder of Veerayatan, Rajgir, Jain Sadhvi Padma Shri Acharya Chandanashriji, revered Tai Ma, provided guidance, affection, blessings, and inspiration not only to the people of the district but also to people across the nation. Her passing is an irreparable loss for all.

Through Veerayatan, she made a significant contribution to spreading the teachings of Bhagwan Mahavir through compassion, education, and non-violence. She is especially known for her social service activities and for making the concept of seva (service to humanity) widely embraced within the Jain community.

The milestones of humanitarian service established by her will remain immortal forever, and no obstacle will be allowed to hinder the work of Veerayatan. She is an invaluable treasure of Bihar. With reverence, we bow to her and pledge to walk on the path she showed us.

Tribute from Sameer Makhani and Family, Jamshedpur

Acharyashri breathed her last at the age of ninety in Pune, Maharashtra. In recognition of her contributions, the Government of Maharashtra honoured Acharya Chandanashriji with a state tribute, draping the national flag over her mortal remains.

Tai Ma dedicated her entire life to serving people. Whether human beings, animals, birds, or even plants, she served all living beings. The guiding principle of her life was:

“Service to humanity is service to God.”

She spread the fundamental principles of Jainism throughout the world. Tai Ma was not only a guide to Jains; she was a spiritual mother to all. She believed that:

“Where there is a temple, there should also be a school.”

Together with her fellow Sadhvis, she established schools alongside temples.

We will never forget her simplicity, courage, and spirit of dedication. Words are insufficient to pay tribute to her, but we will always remember her values and ideals. Her loss is not only India’s loss but a loss to the entire world.

We pray to Bhagwan Mahavir that her blessings continue to remain with us, that we continue to receive her guidance, and that we, together with the entire Veerayatan family, may help fulfil her unfinished work.

Tribute from Ichhabai Bora, Pune

All the Gurus say:

“The one who lives for oneself dies for oneself;
but the one who lives for others may leave this world, yet lives forever in the hearts of people.”

Our Tai Ma has departed physically, but she remains immortal. She never asked for water, nor held anyone’s hand for support. Like a lotus that remains untouched while living in mud, she lived her life in the same way. Though modern in outlook, she spread the fragrance of the Jain tradition. She was a stream of motherly affection, an ocean of love, and a fountain of compassion.

In 2024, I had the good fortune of benefiting from her Chaturmas at Vardhaman Pratishthan, Shivaji Nagar, Pune. She treated me with the affection of a younger sister, something I will remember for the rest of my life.

In conclusion, I would like to say:

“A mother is like the shade of a banyan tree.
A Guru is like a flowing river of knowledge.
Just as a river flows continuously,
so too does wisdom flow without ceasing.
Unless one surrenders at the Guru’s feet,
the depth of life can never truly be understood.”

I also offer my heartfelt tribute on behalf of the late Pujya Anumuniji Maharaj, whose memory remains alive in the Devalali camp.

Humble Salutations at the Feet of Beloved Tai Ma

- Premila, Mahesh, and the entire Shah Family - USA

Today our hearts are deeply distressed. The news of the passing of our revered, affectionate, and inspiring Tai Ma has left a void in our lives that is difficult to express in words.

Tai Ma was not merely the founder of the Veerayatan family; she was the guiding force of our lives, the foundation of our values, and a companion through all our joys and sorrows. Her love, blessings, and guidance gave us strength at every step.

Her life was a beautiful confluence of simplicity, renunciation, service, and compassion. Through her conduct, she taught us that the true meaning of life is not to live for oneself alone but to live for others. There was warmth in her smile, blessings in her words, and boundless love in her heart. Though she is no longer physically among us, the values she instilled, her ideals, and her memories will remain with us forever, guiding us through every stage of life.

We pray to the Bhagwan of the Jain Order to grant our beloved Tai Ma eternal peace, liberation, and a place at His divine feet.

Tribute by Padma Bandiya - Pune

There are some people in whose presence every living being feels happiness; from whose lips every word flows with affection, tenderness, and warmth; whose eyes seem to pour nectar; and whose touch conveys the feeling of liberation itself. How can such a great personality as revered Tai Ma ever leave our hearts?

Her far-reaching vision, deep thinking, and every noble deed based on truth continue to shine in all directions. In every aspect of life, she brought honour and dignity to the position of a Sadhvi, earning the respect of great monks, scholars, and Mahasatis alike.

She truly lived the teaching of her revered Guru, Upadhyaya Amarmuniji Maharaj:

“Do not fear change; change itself is life.”

Most revered Tai Ma was a true benefactor of humanity. Her works keep her alive even today and will continue to do so in the future.

Tribute from Pramukhshri Rajan Pramodchandra Kamani and Committee Members

Acharyashri Chandanashriji Maharaj Saheb’s life itself was a guiding light and an ideal. Through her words and actions, she taught that there should be no discrimination in the present age and that religion and conduct should be lived in unity. She spread the message of harmony and love among all living beings.

In fields such as human service, animal welfare, education, healthcare, spiritual practice, and cleanliness, she made extraordinary contributions. By beautifully harmonising self-discipline with modernity, she inspired countless people to adopt noble values and a vegetarian way of life.

On the sacred land of Bihar, sanctified by the Tirthankaras, she rekindled the light of Jainism and showed humanity a path forward. Her inspiration brought transformation into the lives of innumerable people.

She shared a special bond with the Jamshedpur Sangh. Her memories and blessings will always remain alive there. A divine flame has merged into the Supreme Light. Words are insufficient to describe such a great and revered personality honoured with the Padma Shri. We offer thousands of salutations to her pure and detached soul. Following the path she showed is our true tribute to her.

We pray that the Jamshedpur Sangh continues to maintain a close relationship with Veerayatan and progresses further on the path of religion and righteous conduct.

Tribute from Komatilal Jain, President, Veerayatan Meerut

The Jain community’s revered inspiration and an embodiment of service, spiritual practice, and education, Padma Shri Tai Ma, is no longer among us. This news has filled devotees with profound grief.

Under her leadership, countless welfare projects were carried out in India and abroad, bringing hope and light into the lives of millions. Her compassionate heart, strong determination, and simple personality will continue to inspire society forever.

She herself laid the foundation of Veerayatan Meerut. My late father, Shri Roshanlal Ji, was one of her devoted followers, and through that connection our family continually received her blessings and grace.

Her teachings will always convey the message of love, strength, service, and values. Every part of Veerayatan Meerut will continue to follow the path shown by Tai Ma.

Tribute from Taru Gandhi, Jamshedpur

A radiant personality whose life journey is almost impossible to capture in words.

She dedicated her life to the trinity of service, education, and spiritual practice. Acharyashri successfully made the teachings of Jainism simple and accessible for today’s younger generation, inspiring them to follow the path of dharma.

Our family first came into contact with Acharyashri in the early months of 1972, when she visited Jamshedpur. She later conducted a three-day silent meditation camp there.

For the past fifty-four years, our Gandhi family has continuously received Acharyashri’s affection and blessings. In 1976, inspired by her, my grandfather, the late Komatilal Jawahar Gandhi, organised the first successful “Netrayajna” (Eye Camp) at Veerayatan, Rajgir. In the following years, many more eye camps were successfully organised there by the Gandhi family. In those days, the camps were conducted in open spaces using temporary arrangements. Acharyashri not only blessed these programs but actively participated in their organisation.

During one camp, a severe storm suddenly struck. Everyone became anxious and uncertain, yet Acharyashri handled the situation with remarkable composure and skill. Even today, that incident remains vivid in our memories. Following that event, the decision was made to establish a permanent hospital at Veerayatan.

The Gandhi family offers its heartfelt tribute and respects at the immortal feet of Acharyashri.

Tribute from Smt. Saroj Jain, National Working President, Asha Bihar

The entire life of revered Mataji (Tai Ma) was an unparalleled example of renunciation, austerity, compassion, and service. She not only lived the highest ideals of Jain spiritual practice but also made immense contributions in the fields of women’s empowerment, human service, and the welfare of all living beings. Her work will remain a source of inspiration forever.

The messages of non-violence, self-restraint, and compassion that flowed from her teachings will continue to guide humanity for generations to come.

On behalf of the Asha Bihar family, an organisation dedicated to the noble values of spirituality, non-violence, and vegetarianism, we offer countless flowers of reverence at the feet of the most revered Acharya Vandana Mataji.

Tribute from Shri Jain Shwetambar Bhandar Tirth, Rajgir

The establishment of Veerayatan in Rajgir through the tireless efforts of revered Tai Ma, and the global recognition that Veerayatan has achieved through education, service, and spiritual practice, are the results of her rigorous spiritual practice. Today, Veerayatan has become known throughout the world, a direct outcome of her divine vision and forward-thinking approach.

When Tai Ma first came to Rajgir, she set foot in the Nolakha Temple and also observed her first Chaturmas there. It was from that very place that she laid the foundation of Veerayatan, which has today grown into a vast wish-fulfilling tree. We were fortunate that whenever we met Tai Ma, she would speak to us with great warmth and affection and would patiently resolve our questions.

Whenever any religious event was organised at our institution, she would always participate. Her blessings, smiling face, and nectar-like words will forever remind us of her. Her vision that “where there is a temple, there should also be a school” remains a living example of her progressive thinking.

We pray to Bhagwan Mahavir that He grants her refuge at His divine feet.

Tribute from Jain Lotus Social Group

Jain Lotus Social Group

With an extremely heavy heart and profound sorrow, we inform you that the founder of Veerayatan, an embodiment of compassion, and our guiding light, the most revered Acharya Chandanashriji (Tai Ma), has left her mortal body and attained her final journey.

Her passing marks the end of a golden era of spirituality, social service, and humanity. She dedicated her entire life to serving the disadvantaged, promoting education, and spreading the message of non-violence. Through Veerayatan, the service projects she established will continue to inspire humanity forever.

We pray that Bhagwan grants liberation to her divine soul and gives her disciples and the entire Veerayatan family the strength to bear this immense loss.

Tribute from Sarita Bam, Pune

Decades ago, when Guru Maa Shri Sumati Kunwarji Maharaj’s Chaturmas was held at Ghodnadi, people would come from far and wide to listen to her discourses. Her sweet and gentle voice brought peace and contentment to all who heard her.

As children, we would go to Tai Ma. Through new and innovative activities, she taught us religion while we played. She instilled values in us. Those teachings continue to uplift us in every circumstance of life and give us strength during difficult times.

We will never forget our revered Tai Ma.

Tribute from Praveenji Choravale, Corporator, Pune

Tai Ma was not only our Tai Ma; she was everyone’s Tai Ma. Her heart held goodwill and concern for all. There was such sweetness in her speech that anyone who listened felt as though nectar had been poured into their ears. Anyone who had the opportunity to see her, hear her words, or receive her blessings could never forget her for the rest of their life.

I would like the Sangh and society to organise a grand memorial program in her honour every year and to respect the sentiments of the people.

Tribute from Jain Jagruti

The passing of Padma Shri Acharya Chandanashriji, revered Tai Ma, has brought tears to a golden chapter in the history of Jainism. Along with the entire Jain community, the nation has suffered an irreparable loss in the fields of social service, education, and spirituality.

With her departure, we have lost a great religious leader, spiritual guide, and social reformer.

A Memory Shared by Chandrabala Bora - Pune

I have always been deeply impressed by the extraordinary qualities of revered Tai Ma, but one particular incident involving birds astonished me.

This dates back to the time when Tai Ma would sit beneath the banyan tree in front of her Guru’s meditation hut after morning prayers and engage in scriptural study. This was her daily routine. However, during these study sessions, birds would gather there and their chirping would occasionally disturb the atmosphere.

One day, Tai Ma stood up and, listening lovingly to their chirping, raised both hands towards them and said:

“My dear friends, would you please hold your prayers on that other banyan tree over there?”

The next day, all the birds moved to the other banyan tree. Tai Ma thanked them, and thereafter the prayers and study sessions continued peacefully.

Tribute from Lalit Nahataji - Delhi

Acharyashri Tai Ma was a pioneer in many respects. She was the first Acharya among Jain Sadhvis, the first Jain Sadhvi to receive the Padma Shri award, and even her final farewell was conducted with state honours.

Acharya Shri Tai Ma had a special affection for my father, Shri Harakchandji Nahata. Whenever my father was in Delhi, our residence would become her place of stay. Even after his passing, her blessings and grace continued to remain with our family.

She also visited the Lalitpur Tirth, which our family helped restore. During the consecration ceremony of Mithila Tirth, because of health concerns she could not attend personally and instead sent her disciples Sadhvi Shubhamji and Rohiniji. This was a matter of great pride for us, and I have even had this inscribed on the Tirth’s commemorative plaque.

Some compare her to Mother Teresa. In my view, Tai Ma went far beyond that comparison. Mother Teresa’s mission focused on religious conversion, whereas Acharyashri’s mission was the transformation of values, character and moral culture.

Today, she occupies the third place in our Navkar Mantra. It is a coincidence that Western civilisation reveres Mother Teresa, and on the very day dedicated to Mother Teresa, we received news of our Tai Ma’s departure in Delhi. Her work will be remembered for centuries.

Tribute from Vijaya Desarda - Pune

Whenever I visit Veerayatan Rajgir, Veerayatan Palitana, or Veerayatan Kutch, I have seen revered Tai Ma among children who were orphaned, needy, or underprivileged, comforting them with love, arranging for their education and healthcare, embracing children covered in dust from the streets, and awakening compassion and kindness within them.

I have often thought that Tai Ma has brought light into the lives of thousands of children. If I can bring even a little light into the life of one needy child, that alone would be my true tribute to her.

Tribute by Nilesh Kothari - UK

Param Pujya Padma Shri Acharyashri Chandanaji or Pujya Tai Ma as she was affectionately known has deeply touched and transformed countless lives and has revolutionised Mahavir Bhagwan’s teachings with true Compassion in Action!

I seek forgiveness at the outset as it is hard to do justice with mere words for such a magnanimous person and elevated soul. With a state of mind that is genuinely lost for words and a heavy heart I humbly bow at the feet of our beloved Pujya Tai Ma in reverence and offer this reflection.

I have been associated with Veerayatan for over 2 decades now and my first impressions of Tai Ma were formed at the screening of Never Before in London many years ago. Her words all those years ago still ring true – “The immensity of love and compassion cannot be restricted by tradition”. Veerayatan was born from a foresight and thought that was abundantly clear and the path of selfless service for the betterment of humanity was defined by the clarity with which Tai Ma had imbibed Bhawan Mahavir’s compassionate ideology. This resolute and determined approach from Tai Ma has continued to resonate with me to this day and has helped guide and shape every action.

Being in Tai Ma’s presence for the first time over 15 years ago in Rajgir reinforced my belief that we are indeed fortunate and blessed to be guided by divinity. Tai Ma’s radiant ever-present smile, calmness that she exuded in every breath, the silence that spoke volumes, the hugs that were the unconditional embrace of a mother and the utmost care and awareness for every little detail is testament to a soul that was pure and in complete bliss.

From that wonderful experience over 15 years ago to my most recent meeting in January this year - every opportunity to be in the presence of Tai Ma has been joyous and hugely uplifting. In the most recent meeting, even at an age of 90 years, her eyes sparkled with the energy of a young child wanting to be curious, wanting to explore and create, wanting to make a difference, wanting to spread Bhagwan Mahavir’s message of love and compassion, wanting to guide and wanting to listen and be involved . This has left an indelible mark and not having that physical presence amongst us is most definitely a heartbeat missing!

The magnitude of this loss is hard to express in words with her legacy extending far and wide across all communities.

To challenge conventional thinking and have the vision of Service to Humanity as a key pillar of Bhagwan Mahavir’s message of compassion was revolutionary.

To manifest this vision in the land where Bhagwan Mahavir walked, against all odds, and with a group of Sadhvis shows Tai Ma’s courage and conviction.

To transcend caste, creed, religion, race, and circumstances and transform lives of countless needy people through health, education and spiritual development shows Tai Ma’s inner calling and a divine energy that we were all blessed to have witnessed.

Tai Ma has not wavered in this selfless service from a very young age and the impact she has had on education to the underprivileged, affordable healthcare to the needy and social upliftment especially in disaster stuck regions has been tremendous and priceless. Her vision and establishment of SCVP have been a remarkable opportunity for all of us to connect and learn about Mahavir Bhagwan’s teachings and cultivate the art of selfless giving.

Whilst Tai Ma has never sought accolades for her work, we should all feel incredibly humbled that Pujya Tai Ma is the first Jain Sadhvi to have the title of Acharyashri conferred upon, the first to receive Padma Shri and now the first to receive a State Funeral draped in the Indian Flag

Every action can be spiritual and by becoming a living example of Compassion in Action, Pujya Tai Ma illuminated a beautiful path for us all to follow. A life synonymous with progress and forward-thinking ensured that the teachings of Bhagwan Mahavir remain dynamic, relevant, and deeply meaningful in the modern world.

Whilst we grieve in the moment and search longingly for that calm presence especially in today’s troubled times, we seek solace from the tremendous impact we have felt in her presence and offer our heartfelt and infinite gratitude to a great soul who has made an exceptional contribution to humanity.

One of Tai Ma’s beautiful messages that has struck me and stayed with me

Truth is for oneself;
Love is for others; and
Compassion is for all.’

સત્ય પોતાના માટે છે;
પ્રેમ બીજાઓ માટે છે; અને
કરુણા બધા માટે છે.’

Tribute by Meena Pathak Sarathi

- Special Correspondent, PTI, Delhi

“If the waters of the seven seas were made into ink,
if the entire earth were turned into paper,
and if all the trees in the world became pens,
even then the virtues of Tai Ma could not be fully written.”

This means that even if the waters of the seven seas became ink and the whole earth became paper, the greatness and virtues of Tai Ma would still be impossible to describe completely.

From a small village near Pune to Rajgir in Bihar; from Shakuntala to Sadhvi Chandana, from Sadhvi Chandana to Acharyashri, and ultimately to Tai Ma her journey embraced so many dimensions that future generations may find it difficult to believe that such a pious human being ever walked this earth.

Since childhood, I had heard stories of Tai Ma’s courage because my mother belonged to the Veerayatan Balika Sangh. During the 1970s, when Veerayatan was being established, she faced numerous struggles and challenges. There were attacks by bandits. Yet when attacked, she neither feared nor retreated. When the police later questioned her, she refused to identify the attackers and forgave them. Such was Tai Ma’s compassion. She did not merely preach compassion, her entire life was an inspiration.

The first time I visited Veerayatan with my mother, I felt I was going to meet an extraordinary personality. When I arrived, I saw her distributing medicine made from jamun seeds to people suffering from diabetes. Such was the depth of her concern for others.

When she established Veerayatan in the 1970s, she did not simply create an institution. She built a bridge between religion and action, between public welfare and faith, and for the empowerment of women.

Whether speaking from major platforms in London and America or conversing with the children of labourers on the dusty roads of Bihar, she remained equally simple and approachable. Such a personality is exceedingly rare; I have never encountered another like her.

I visited her again last year. Her health was not good at the time. I spent considerable time with her. At first, I felt guilty that I might be disturbing her rest. But when we spoke, the conversation was neither about illness nor suffering. It was about the future plans, what should be done next, how work should move forward, and how young people could be engaged. To be thinking so far ahead at the age of ninety was truly extraordinary.

When I left that room, I came away inspired. When we experience minor aches and discomforts, we often take to our beds, but Tai Ma’s thoughts were always directed toward the future.

Where has Tai Ma gone? She is present with every person standing in line at the hospitals she established to regain their eyesight. She is present in the intellect of every child receiving an education in the schools she founded. She is present in the hopes of every person facing adversity.

She received the Padma Shri because of her work. In truth, it was the Padma Shri that was honoured by being bestowed upon Tai Ma. Her achievements transcend even that distinguished recognition.

Tribute by Nirmala Singvi, Pune

The greatness and uniqueness of revered Tai Ma lay in the fact that she translated Bhagwan’s teachings into practical action. In other words, it was her public welfare activities that made her truly great.

I offer my reverence to her greatness.

Tribute by Sajjan Bora, Pune

- Smt. Sajjan Bora, Pune

“Tai Ma! You became like water mixed with sandalwood;
your fragrance spread through every part of every being.”

This is how I feel. It is impossible to fully describe Tai Ma’s virtues, yet I would still like to say a few words.

From childhood, I experienced Tai Ma’s compassion closely. Before her initiation, when Guru Maa Shri Sumati Kunwarji Maharaj’s Chaturmas was held at Ghodnadi, we children studied in the Jain school. Shakuntala (Tai Ma’s pre-initiation name) also studied with us. Our teacher paid more attention to the children of wealthy families and neglected the children from poor families. Whenever Shakuntala noticed this, she would support and encourage us. It was then that our friendship began.

Once, during an examination, the teacher was testing the children on the names of the sixteen Satis. Whenever he called a number, the students had to say the corresponding Sati’s name. The children from wealthy families were asked easy questions, but a poor child was given number seventeen. Naturally, there was no seventeenth Sati, and the child became silent.

Shakuntala raised her hand and asked permission to answer. As soon as the teacher agreed, she replied, “Your wife!”

You can imagine how angry the teacher must have been and the atmosphere that followed. Yet Shakuntala was as courageous as she was compassionate. Even as a child, it was her nature to take difficulties upon herself in order to help others and stand up for what was right.

A Memory Shared by Hemlata Choradia, Pune

The love that Acharyashri Tai Ma showered upon people settled deep within their hearts.

When my granddaughter was three years old, we went on a pilgrimage and stayed at Veerayatan Rajgir. During a devotional gathering, my granddaughter saw a microphone, picked it up, and began reciting a prayer before the meal.

Hearing this, Tai Ma lifted her into her lap, placed her hand on her head, blessed her warmly, and gave her a small, beautiful cloth for sitting. Even today my granddaughter remembers Tai Ma. It is as though she still feels Tai Ma’s blessings within her.

Dear Tai Ma!

- Nima (Nirmala Gandhi), Indore, President, Veerayatan Balika Sangh

What should I forget, and what should I remember?

You were the embodiment of motherly affection.
You were the embodiment of love.

How can I ever describe your greatness?

You are gone, yet you remain with us.
You have departed, yet you continue to live within us.

Tribute from Shobhamuttha, Pune

The very mention of the words “Tai Ma” brings to mind the gentle touch of her hands, the sweetness of her speech, the serenity of her face, and her warm smile, along with her teaching:

“Be friends with a smile.”

We have forgotten how to smile. If we can bring this teaching into our lives and continue smiling in every situation, then sorrow will find no place in life.

Experiencing Tai Maharaj

- Neeraj Jha, Patna

When Bhagwan Krishna was preparing to leave his mortal body beneath the Ashwattha tree in the Prabhas region, he called the wise Uddhava and told him:

“After my departure, go to Vrindavan and tell Radha that Krishna is no more.”

As Uddhava set out for Vrindavan, he was troubled and worried. How would he deliver such sorrowful news to Radha? What effect would it have on her? How deeply distressed would she become? Would he be able to bear her grief? What words could possibly console her?

When Uddhava reached Vrindavan and met Radha on the banks of the Yamuna, she immediately asked:

“Tell me, Uddhava, how did you come here? What brings you? Did Krishna send you? What important message have you brought? Please tell me quicklyI am eager to know.”

With hesitation and sorrow, Uddhava slowly replied:

“Radha, Krishna is no more. He has left us and departed for the next world.”

Radha laughed softly and said:

“Uddhava, you are regarded as a great wise man. If Krishna never left Vrindavan, how can he leave for another world? Close your eyes. Can you not hear the sound of his flute? Can you not smell the fragrance of his breath in the breeze? Can you not feel his touch in the waters of the Yamuna? Uddhava, close the eyes of knowledge and open the eyes of the heart. Then you will see that Krishna pervades every and all directions. He is present throughout the entire universe.”

My condition became much like Uddhava’s when I received the news of Tai Maharaj’s passing. My heart was deeply shaken. Three decades of personal association - seeing her closely, speaking with her, listening to her sweet words, and receiving her blessings – came flooding back. These memories filled my heart. Remembering these moments, I was overwhelmed with sorrow.

A few words arose from the depths of my heart, and I sent them to the respected Shri Abhay Bhai Firodia. His sensitive response made me realiset hat perhaps the eyes of knowledge had closed, but the eyes of the heart had opened.

Tai Maharaj is not merely a person who came and went. She is an experience. She is here in Veerayatan. Her immortal message of humanity, compassion for all living beings, and enlightened wisdom continues to shine. Her message is to remove suffering, uphold human values, and keep the lamp of knowledge burning brightly.

Her gentle touch can be felt in every corner of Veerayatan. She is present in the very air here. In the students studying in Veerayatan’s schools, her blessings take living form. In the restored eyesight of hundreds of thousands of people treated through Veerayatan’s eye hospitals, Tai Maharaj lives on. In the selfless love and blessings of the Sadhvis is the sweetness of her voice.

Tai Maharaj has not gone anywhere. She lives and will continue to live in the heart of every member of the Veerayatan family.

To rekindle once again the torch of Veerayatan that dispelled centuries of darkness, she was sent by Bhagwan Mahavir and Bhagwan Buddha. Such a personality can never truly depart.

My heartfelt tribute to the revered, unforgettable Padma Shri Tai Maharaj, Acharya Chandanaji Maharaj.

Tribute from Shri Sumati Mahila Mandal

- Hansaben Malani and Committee Sisters, Shri Sumati Mahila Mandal, Kolkata

In the vast courtyard of the Jain Sangh flowed a pure stream of compassion, and among its many distinguished personalities was the radiant and revered Padma Shri Tai Ma. She was a noble soul who dedicated her entire life at the feet of the Jain Order.

Our Sumati Mahila Mandal was also established under her inspiration. Time and again, she visited the Kolkata Kamani Jain Bhavan, where she sowed the seeds of knowledge, service, and values. Those seeds have today grown into magnificent trees.

Such was the power of her influence. Every part of her being reflected hospitality, service, virtues, education, and compassion.

Tai Ma, whether physically present or not, you continue to shower your blessings upon Veerayatan and upon all of us.

Tribute by Kumkum A. Doshi, Kolkata

The very remembrance of revered Tai Ma creates a unique feeling within the heart. It is as though an immense ocean of compassion and kindness begins to surge within us. This ocean did not remain confined to idealsit flowed into the lives of countless people. I would like to express, as my tribute, her compassion and grace that I personally experienced in my life.

During her Kolkata Chaturmas in 1972, revered Tai Ma established the “Chandana Swadhyay Mandir” for children. A few years later, when the number of children attending had declined, Shri Haribhai began considering ways to improve the institution. When he presented his thoughts before Tai Ma in Rajgir, she immediately sent her disciple Sadhvi Shilapiji along with two capable teachers from Nairobi, Binaben and Juliben. They stayed in Kolkata for ten days and trained the teachers, after which Chandana Swadhyay Mandir continued to function successfully.

Later, when Shri Haribhai suddenly became seriously ill and he had to go to Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital for treatment, a doctor’s appointment was obtained but a hospital bed could not be arranged. Upon contacting Tai Ma, she immediately made the necessary arrangements. Thereafter, she would visit him regularly. Listening to the auspicious discourses of revered Tai Ma and Shri Jayant Muni Maharaj, Shri Haribhai would often sit with his eyes closed in devotion and peace.

It is remarkable that Shri Haribhai was born on the first day of Paryushan and passed away on the second day of Paryushan. Therefore, even during Paryushan, Tai Ma sent Sadhvi Sadhanaji to attend and bless his memorial gathering.

I will never forget this compassion and grace for the rest of my life. I firmly believe that her blessings continue to shower upon all of us.

Tribute from Shvetambar Sthanakvasi Jain Sangh, Gurugram

- Shri K. L. Jain, President, Shvetambar Sthanakvasi Jain Sangh, Gurugram

Revered Acharyashri Chandanaji was an extraordinary personality in Jainism. In 1987, she became the first Jain Sadhvi to receive the title of Acharya, and on 26 January 2022, she became the first Jain Sadhvi to be honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri Award for her outstanding social service.

Born as Shakuntala in Maharashtra, she embraced renunciation at the age of fifteen and dedicated her life to the Amarmuni tradition of the Shvetambar Sthanakvasi order, where she became known for her selfless service and compassion.

After she received the Padma Shri, our Gurugram Sangh had the privilege of honouring her in Gurugram, where we celebrated her as a symbol of Jain values for our community.

An Extraordinary Human Legacy

In 1973, she founded Veerayatan in Rajgir, Bihar. Through its programmes in education, healthcare, service, and empowerment, Veerayatan reached millions of people worldwide and transformed the lives of the poor and those affected by disasters.

Through institutions such as Netra Jyoti Seva Mandir, she provided free eye treatment to more than two million patients. Her service also included orthopaedic and surgical clinics, anti-polio campaigns, and relief work during the devastating Kosi floods of 2008, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to serving humanity.

Her work expanded into women’s empowerment, vocational training, and international centres in India, Nepal, and other countries, where she successfully integrated spirituality with practical humanitarian service.

Tai Ma’s life of non-violence, friendship toward all living beings, and unwavering determination will continue to inspire us forever. Her departure is not only a loss for the Jain community but for all humanity. We pray that her soul attains liberation and that we continue advancing her mission of compassion.

With this inspiration, we offer our heartfelt tribute.

Revered, Graceful Tai Ma! Embodiment of Compassion!

- Omkar Sharma Kashyap, Literary Inspiration Forum, Nawada, Bihar

You will remain alive in the hearts of your followers forever.

Today the heart is deeply distressed. It feels as though this is a dark night for humanity. Not only Rajgir, but the entire lamp of Magadh, a divine pillar of light, has merged into infinity.

Tai Ma’s life was a shining example of spiritual discipline, self-restraint, and unwavering dedication to public welfare. Her affection was not merely maternal love; it was a divine energy that illuminated the soul.

Every word that flowed from her lips seemed to dispel the darkness within and kindle the lamp of truth, peace, and wisdom.

The emptiness created by her departure is not merely the loss of a great soul; it feels like the pause of an entire era of spiritual consciousness.

Her ideals and divine teachings will continue to illuminate our path forever.

Heartfelt tributes.

Tribute by Gunvant Parikh

- Shri Jalaram Satsang Mandal, Jamshedpur

Even the title “Padma Shri” could not fully define the greatness of Acharya Chandanashriji. Though she lived in a physical body, her life reflected a state beyond bodily identity. The humility that enables a person to become truly great was deeply rooted in her heart.

She was an embodiment of patience and courage, qualities that enabled her to render countless services to humanity. She never distinguished between people on the basis of caste, religion, or status. With an equal vision towards all faiths and a spirit of detachment, she initiated and completed numerous service projects.

The saying “A woman is a great power” became a living reality through her life. In this age, we witnessed that divine strength in her. Hundreds of salutations to that extraordinary soul.

With the passing of this embodiment of renunciation, love, and service, the entire Jain community feels as though it has lost a guardian. Her compassionate service was always available to all sections of society without discrimination. The sweetness of her speech was incomparable.

The Patna Sthanakvasi Jain Sangh and the entire Jain community of Patna offer their heartfelt tributes to her.

Tribute by Vidyushprabha

A few days before her passing, I learned that Tai Maharaj’s health was improving. I wanted very much to meet her, but that did not happen.

The fragrance of humanity that she spread throughout her life will always remain a source of inspiration for all of us. Until her final moments, she dedicated her time and energy to service.

History will always remember her contributions in the fields of service and education. Service, education, and spiritual strength were synonymous with her life. There was sweetness in every part of her being. Her presence was a reservoir of energy. The affection and love she gave us as brothers and sisters made us feel that there was never any difference among us - we were always one family.

Her life was a blessing for this century. Compassion and love flowed through every vein of her being. She was as artistic as she was compassionate. The educational and service institutions of Veerayatan are living expressions of her vision, and the Brahmi Kala Mandiram stands as a testimony to her creativity.

Her name and virtues will remain immortal for generations, and through them she will continue to live on.

Tribute by Sanjeev Roshan Lal Jain

- Meerut Veerayatan

You are immortal. Your path of service, education, and spiritual practice has been immensely beneficial for the welfare of humanity. We will remain dedicated to that mission -this is our solemn pledge.

Tribute by Roshni Jain

The nature of sandalwood is that the more it is rubbed, the more fragrance it spreads. Tai Ma’s life was a symbol of this very truth. Every moment of her life was filled with dedication, and it was this dedication that gave her personality a fragrance that can still be experienced in countless lives today. She was not merely a name; she was an experience -one that grew deeper the more it was shared.

During the 1970s, in the Rajgir region, she began serving people struggling with hunger, illness, and helplessness. It was during this period that she resolved that religion should not remain confined to spiritual practice alone but should enter society through service. From this resolve emerged Veerayatan, transforming her life into a mission.

Global Expansion and Impact of Her Projects

Today, Veerayatan has evolved into a global service movement with active centres in countries including India, the United States, Britain, and Kenya. Through more than seventy service projects, it provides education to over 50,000 students, free or affordable healthcare to millions of patients, and programmes that empower thousands of women to become self-reliant.

Through eye-care camps, sight has been restored to millions. The organisation has also made significant contributions to disaster-relief efforts at the national level. This expansion is not merely a matter of numbers; it reflects the spirit of compassion, service, and social responsibility that Tai Ma established through her life.

From National Recognition to National Inspiration Tai Ma’s Proud Legacy

In recognition of her unparalleled contributions, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri. She became the first Jain Acharya whose passing was commemorated by the Government of Maharashtra as a state-recognised “Nirvan Mahotsav.” What began as a tribute became a national celebration of awareness and values, creating a memorable chapter in history.

Today, her memory is no longer confined to emotions alone -it has become a resolve: the resolve to live her values. The truest tribute to her is to bring those values into our own lives. Her life itself is a path that will continue to guide everyone toward service and truth.

Jai Jinendra.

Dear beloved Tai Ma, your life is our path, your inspiration is our strength, and your fragrance is our identity.

Tribute by Manju Bohra (Chennai)

During her nearly ninety years of life, she dedicated about sixty years continuously to the service of humanity.

Beginning her mission from Veerayatan, Rajgir, she established schools for children who wandered on the streets and survived by begging. By providing them with education, books, clothing, and complete support, she transformed their futures.

She established eye hospitals and gave new vision to countless people. Whether during the earthquakes in Nepal and Kutch or difficult times such as the COVID pandemic, she always remained engaged in service along with her disciple community.

One of her remarkable qualities was that she viewed every person with equal respect, whether a rickshaw driver or a senior government official. Her message was always inspiring:

“Wherever you go, do not become part of the problem, become the solution.”

Her extraordinary knowledge, sharp memory, and divine radiance made her personality even more exceptional.

A Short Tribute

- Ashok, Adesh, Supriya, and Anika, Delhi

“We may continue searching, but we will not find another embodiment of compassion like Tai Ma for many lifetimes and many ages.
Tai Ma, we pray at your feet -please continue to bless us and guide us on the path.”

Message from Kaushalendra Kumar, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha)

The Veerayatan institution was established by Tai Ma in my parliamentary constituency, Nalanda. This organisation has continuously served poor, helpless, and disadvantaged people. Its inspiration and guiding force was Acharya Chandanaji Maharaj.

I am deeply saddened by her passing.

At this difficult time, I extend my heartfelt condolences to all Sadhvis, Sadhaks, and staff members associated with Veerayatan.

Tribute by Vimala Khivsara

There is a mother who gives birth, and then there was Tai Ma - the embodiment of compassion who nurtured and shaped our lives. Through seemingly small actions, she showed us the right path.

She was a unique personality who embraced everyone in her heart. In her presence there was no distinction between rich and poor, great and small - everyone was one. Such a loving mother has now left us feeling orphaned.

What did you not do for others, Tai Ma? You listened patiently to everyone’s concerns and harsh words, yet never lost your self-control. Steadfastly following the path of service, you guided countless wandering souls through your nectar-like words.

Without concern for yourself, you devoted your life selflessly to the welfare of the poor, the orphaned, and the helpless. You forgot yourself in the service of others.

“To regard others’ suffering as one’s own and dedicate one’s body to helping them.”

This was the essence of our revered Tai Ma’s life.

Blessed are you, Tai Ma, who walked in the footsteps of Lord Mahavir. Your vision of establishing a school and a hospital wherever there is a temple was a noble and inspiring resolve.

Tribute by Vipin Anand Prakash Jain

- All India Shvetambar Sthanakvasi Jain Conference

The Gujarati fortnightly magazine “Halchal” (Kolkata), in its issues of 24 April 2026 and 1 May 2026, paid tribute to Acharya Chandana Shri Ji by highlighting both her revolutionary ideas and the works through which those ideas were put into practice.

One of Acharya Chandanaji’s distinguishing qualities was that she firmly held to the fundamental principles of religion while never blindly accepting established traditions merely because they were customary. Her heart overflowed with boundless love and compassion for humanity.

The heights she attained were not reached through an easy path. She faced many difficulties, yet remained steadfast in her convictions and continued moving forward. Within Jainism, she forged a new link between tradition and service. Her words and conduct reflected truthfulness, and she remained unwaveringly committed to the core principles of Lord Mahavir.

Tai Ma’s simple life, gentle behaviour, and profound devotion to Lord Mahavir naturally attracted everyone. During her stays at our home in Delhi, I had the privilege of spending time with her and learning many valuable lessons from her life.

Her life was highly disciplined and regulated. She would often say:

“One should eat only as much as a bird eats.”

She herself practiced this completely. In the mornings she would often take only a few pieces of almond or a single fruit, and even during the day her food intake remained extremely modest.

Her heart was filled with compassion. The sight of a suffering person would immediately move her. She opposed rigid and narrow traditions and firmly believed that Lord Mahavir’s message of friendship and love was meant for the welfare of the entire world.

It was from this spirit that she gave the inspiring slogan:

“Where there is a Jain temple, there should also be a school.”

With this vision, she established institutions dedicated to education and service so that the path of welfare and compassionate service could be opened for humanity and the compassion of Lord Mahavir could reach every person.

Poetic Tribute

Silence will no longer speak,
Yet your life will be truly fulfilled.

And completely transform you.

You will attain inner purity and noble feelings,
Along with fulfilment and compassion.

The joy within will overflow,
The more you share it, the more it will grow.

Tai Ma will remain seated in your heart,
And your spiritual bliss will continue to grow.

There will be joy, joy, and only joy -
You yourself will become that joy.

Tribute by Shri Naveen Bhai Suchanti

Today’s gathering is not merely an occasion of mourning; it is a moment to remember the divine and inspiring life of Pujya Acharya Shri Chandana Ji Maharaj.

Her entire life was a message in itself. As the first female Acharya of the Jain tradition, she provided a new direction, confidence, and vision to society and the wider Jain community.

She became the first Jain Sadhvi to be honoured nationally with the Padma Shri award. Her final rites were conducted with state honours by the Government of Maharashtra, reflecting the immense social impact of her life and work.

She was the living embodiment of compassion and service. Her vision was clear: religion should not remain confined to scriptures but should become a way of thinking and living. She did not merely speak about service - she demonstrated it through her actions.

Her inspiring slogan was:

“Where there is a Jain temple, there should also be a school.”

She lit the lamp of hope, education, and compassion in the lives of village children and underprivileged youth. She nurtured self-reliance, humility, service, and kindness.

The values that Veerayatan imparts today are a direct reflection of her vision. Her life and ideals will continue to inspire society and future generations forever.

The life of Pujya Acharyashri Chandana Ji Maharaj was the living embodiment of Lord Mahavir’s compassion, non-violence, and humanity. Through a disciplined life, she carried Lord Mahavir’s message to people everywhere and made it universal.

She shared a deeply affectionate and spiritual connection with Kamani Jain Bhavan. Under her guidance and inspiration, Sadhvi Chetanaji got initiated in Kolkata. During the 1972 Chaturmas, Chandana Swadhyay Mandir was established, planting the seeds of religion and values in a new generation. Today, those values have spread throughout the world, and many young people from here continue to conduct religious practices and Pratikraman even abroad.

By inspiring women and society toward austerity, spiritual practice, and religious discipline, she awakened spiritual awareness. Her compassion and motherly affection touched innumerable lives.

Today, our collective resolve should be to walk the path of service, religion, and compassion shown by her, to cultivate a life filled with love and kindness, and to fulfil the dreams she envisioned.

Tribute by Shri Hardev Bhai Seth, Navlakha Upashray

The entire life of Pujya Acharya Shri Chandana Ji Maharaj was dedicated to service, education, and the welfare of humanity. Service to mankind was the central purpose of her life, and with compassion and dedication she expanded countless service activities.

Her practice of silence, hospitality, and loving nature remain alive in everyone’s hearts even today.

She had a special affection and close association with Navlakha Upashray, a relationship that remains unforgettable. Her first Chaturmas at Navlakha Upashray took place in 1971. Through her inspiration, society benefited from many spiritual and religious initiatives. In 2012, she was honoured with the prestigious “Padma Shri” award, a fitting recognition of her extraordinary and inspiring life.

She lived such a vast, noble, and inspiring life that it cannot be fully described in words. The Navlakha Upashray family bows to her service, compassion, and spiritual discipline, and prays that her blessings and grace continue to remain with society forever.

By walking the path of service, spiritual practice, and humanity that she demonstrated, we too can make our lives meaningful. That alone will be our true tribute to her.

Tribute by Shri Rajubhai Jain - USA

Pujya Tai Maharaj’s extraordinary life was a symbol of compassion and universal truth. Taking diksha at the age of fifteen, she became an inspiration for a global spiritual movement that touched the lives of millions. Through Veerayatan and the Sadhvi Sangh, she spread the ideals of service, education, and compassion throughout the world. She was extremely farsighted and possessed a modern outlook. Her personality was not limited to spirituality alone; she also reflected deeply on subjects such as the power of love and universal humanity.

Recalling the cherished moments spent with her, I would say that Tai Maharaj’s affection was filled with maternal love and warmth. Everyone who met her experienced love, acceptance, and blessings, and she made each person feel a part of the Veerayatan family.

She inspired people across the world, as well as the Sadhvi Sangh, to move forward on the path of humanity, compassion, and service. Her influence will continue to guide humanity in the years to come.

Tai Maharaj lives not only in memories but also in the hearts of all those whose lives she touched with her love, compassion, and blessings.

Tribute by Dr. Parth Biswas, Netra Jyoti Seva Mandiram - Rajgir

Veerayatan is not merely an institution; it is a family and a place where lives are transformed. When I came to Veerayatan as a young ophthalmologist, Pujya Tai Maharaj placed her trust in me and entrusted me with the responsibility of such a large eye hospital. Through her guidance and the work of Netra Jyoti Seva Mandiram, I was continuously inspired to move forward.

Tai Ma’s work was not limited to medical care; she also taught people how to interact with one another and fulfil their responsibilities with care and sensitivity. Inspired by her blessings, I carried out significant work in the fields of eye care and social service, and eventually had the honour of serving as President of the All India Ophthalmological Society.

Today it is our duty to carry forward the ideals of service, spiritual practice, and education that she gave us, and to ensure that this light reaches future generations.

Tribute by Shri Satvik Kamdar

The affection and blessings of Pujya Tai Maharaj were a source of strength and faith for countless families. Recalling a difficult period in my own family, I remember that during the COVID pandemic, when my father was seriously ill, Tai Ma reassured us with unwavering confidence that everything would be fine - and it was.

Tai Maharaj was not merely a spiritual guide. She understood the feelings, aspirations, and struggles of young people. She was a practical source of inspiration who could relate to their challenges and help them navigate life’s uncertainties.

By listening to people’s concerns with love and empathy, she gave them confidence, clarity, and direction. She encouraged them toward success and offered a new perspective on life and career. Her words, affection, and blessings brought positive transformation, and she taught us to live with hope and enthusiasm rather than sorrow.

Her confidence and inspiration continue to illuminate our lives today. By walking the path she showed us and doing work that enables us to face her with pride, we can make our lives truly meaningful.

Tribute by Kishore Mehta and Family - Mumbai

The news of the mahaprayana of Param Pujya Acharya Chandana Ji Maharaj Saheb has left our entire family in profound grief. Words feel inadequate at this moment.

Tai Ma was not merely an institution builder - she was Veerayatan itself. What she created at Rajgir through sheer faith, determination, and an ocean of compassion was nothing short of divine. No one has built, and perhaps no one ever will build, what she built from the deepest corners of her heart and soul.

Our family’s bond with Veerayatan goes back to 1972, and we carry that association as one of the greatest honours of our lives. Tai Ma always held our father, Late Shri D. R. Mehta Ji, in her heart as one of the founding pillars of Veerayatan Rajgir, and her remembrance of him is a blessing our family will forever cherish.

I am currently in the United States and, to my deepest regret, could not be present for the final rites and pay my last respects in person. This weighs heavily on my heart.

I pray with folded hands that Tai Ma’s luminous legacy - her vision, her values, and her compassion - continues to shine through you and all the Sadviji Maharajs, unbroken and undiminished, for generations to come. The flame she lit must never waver.

With deepest reverence and heartfelt condolences,

Tribute by Puja Parekh

Tai Ma was a pioneering leader and will forever remain an inspiration to me. Her dedication to Veerayatan and the precious time she spent with me will always be remembered. Shat Shat Naman at her lotus feet. There was no one like you, and there never will be. With all my heart, I offer my deepest respects and gratitude to you.

Tribute by Rohit, Pravina, Meera and Punir Mehta - UK

Shocked and deeply saddened! It is the end of an era. Her pioneering work in the pious land of the Tirthankars, often faced with challenging circumstances, was marked by resoluteness and unflinching determination.

We were very fortunate to host several of her stays in London.

For our family, her visits to London were among the most cherished blessings of our lives. To host Tai Ma was to welcome not merely a revered Acharya but a presence of profound compassion, clarity and grace. Her words, her silences, her unwavering resolve all of these stay with us.

She leaves behind the Veerayatan family, her devoted Sadhvis, and countless devotees around the world for whom she was, quite simply, Tai Ma.

Om Shanti. Om Arham.

Tribute by Rasilaben Shah - UK

My heartfelt condolences to all on the nirvana of Tai Ma. Words cannot express the deep sadness I felt at this news and for some days words evaded me.

Only very rarely do we get the birth of such divine souls, like Tai Ma, who change the life for the better for the living beings on this earth. Her immense love and compassion for all living beings and great desire to improve their lives is a testament to the divinity within her.

‘Maitim Bhuesu Kappaye’, was Tai Ma’s life. Only an enlightened soul feels the pain of other souls enough to do something about it. Her understanding that unless you make the material life of less fortunate people better, only then can you influence their moral values. Her deep contemplation on Mahavir Bhagwan’s teachings and logical way of presenting these, in the present time, really struck a cord with me.

With Tai Ma’s foresight in setting up a Jain school here and with Shilapiji Maharaj’s guidance and teachings, I learnt and understood the Jain Dharma through the many scriptures including Sukti Triveni, Tattvartha Sutra and Samayasaar to name a few.

Tai Ma fulfilled her childhood wish to be like the ‘sky’, giving space to and showering light and rain on all living beings she met. I feel very fortunate to have known such a superior and unique soul, who has influenced and shaped my life and thoughts. She may not be with us but her fragrance and memories will be with us forever. We take great strength from the fact that her vision will continue with you all.

The passing of revered Padma Shri Acharya Shri Chandanaji Maharaj marks the end of an era of compassion and selfless service. Her presence was a source of strength, inspiration, and warmth for countless lives, including mine.

Though she is no longer with us, her teachings and spirit will continue to guide us forever. The void she leaves behind is immeasurable, but so is the light she has kindled in our hearts.

With deepest respect and gratitude, I offer my humble shraddhanjali.

Tribute by Vikram Mehta and family, USA

Our hearts are heavy with profound sadness as we learned that our beloved Tai Ma left us today. She was the embodiment of love, compassion, and service: a guiding light for humanity.

When we met Tai Ma, she said she had been looking for me. Ever since she accepted us as disciples in 1989, she became a blessing for us, enriching our lives and becoming our entire family’s Ma. We feel grateful to have had the joy of welcoming Tai Ma and Veerayatan Parivar to our home in the US as a kind of second Veerayatan. The memories of Ma’s blessings, love, teachings, and guidance are so woven into our family’s life that we cannot imagine her absence. She made history by becoming the first Acharya (Jain Sadhvi) to officiate a marriage, blessing each of our daughters at their weddings.

Today, the memories and experiences we shared with her play in our hearts and minds like an uninterrupted vision. Harsha spent months with Tai Ma in Rajgir, Agra, Kutch, Pune, and Nepal after the earthquake there, and also traveled with her in the US. Harsha and I both volunteered several times in Kutch after the 2001 earthquake, which gave us the opportunity to spend more time with Tai Ma.

The last time we saw Tai Ma was during her 90th birthday celebration in Palitana in January 2026. We arrived a few days early and were fortunate to spend quality time with her afterward in Pune. When we parted, she showered us with love and affection, holding our hands, hugging us, and looking into our eyes with her gentle gaze. She tilted her head as if to tell us it was the last time we would meet.

She told Harsha and me to take care of ourselves, our daughters, and our grandchildren. Words are not enough to describe her love, guidance, concern, and care for our family, extended family, and humanity.

I have not seen God, but I saw a loving and living God in Tai Ma.

Tribute by Shree Sthanakvasi Jain Sangh Nairobi

On behalf of Shree Sthanakvasi Jain Sangh Nairobi, we express our deepest condolences on the sad demise of Param Pujya Acharyashri Chandanaji, Pujya Tai Ma.

In Kenya, her contribution has been both deep and lasting. Over the past 35 years, she made numerous visits to Shree Sthanakvasi Jain Sangh Nairobi along with other Veerayatan Sadhvijis whenever the Jain Sangh of Nairobi requested her.

She played an instrumental role in uplifting the Jain community in Kenya, giving it strength, direction, and spiritual inspiration. Her visionary commencement of Shree Chandana Vidyapeeth in Nairobi nearly 30 years ago with the support of Sadhviji Shilapiji and other Sadhvijis of Veerayatan stands as an invaluable gift to our society. Through this noble institution, she planted seeds of Jainism, learning, values, discipline, and character in the hearts of many young people.

Her support to the Cerebral Palsy Centre in Nairobi further reflected the depth of her compassion and her unwavering commitment to serving those in need. This work remains a living expression of her belief that true religion lies in caring for others, especially the weak, the suffering, and the forgotten.

While we are deeply saddened by the loss of such a high soul, we also celebrate her extraordinary life and legacy. Tai Ma was not only a spiritual leader; she was an inspirational figure for Jains in Nairobi and throughout the world. Her life reminded us that greatness lies in simplicity, that faith must express itself through service, and that true leadership is rooted in love and sacrifice.

Her leadership, humility and tireless dedication have left an indelible mark on society. She was not only a spiritual guide but also a nurturing mother for millions who regarded her as ‘Ma’. Her light will continue to guide all those who believe in the power of compassion, selfless service, and education as paths to uplift humanity.

With profound respect and heartfelt condolences,
