The important practice of forgiveness

Pratikraman in English

Today the delivery of Pratikraman in English by teachers of Shri Chandana Vidyapeeth (SCVP) Jain School has become an established and well-received part of the Paryushan Parva activities in the United Kingdom and is continuing to flourish. This year the Pratikraman in English was delivered for all eight days in two places, London and Manchester. On average nearly 200 people attended on a daily basis and considerably more at the weekend and on the last day! What was fantastic to see was the number of young people who participated in this beautiful ritual!

“The energy created with collective recitation has been spiritually uplifting and the power to go within – I hope the meditation practice, especially connecting with the soul (atma) within – I can practice at home. Blessings and love to all teachers….’ (A participant)

So what is unique about Pratikraman in English?

  • It is delivered using a powerpoint presentation so that all are able to see and follow the content easily.
  • Many sutras are recited together either in the original language, slowly and clearly, or in both languages and key sutras, like Vandittu and the transgrassions are recited in English - as these outline the transgressions for which one needs to seek repentance – so that everyone is involved and are learning at the same time.
  • The meaning of the various sutras, the logical sequence and the process is explained gradually and meaningfully over 3-4 days.
  • Detailed explanation of 1-2 sutras are included – this year we focused on Iriyavahiyam sutra and Khamemi Savva jive
  • Everyday a short meditation is conducted so people can reflect on a key aspect for their own personal development

And the benefits…….

  • Deeper understanding of this beautiful ritual and religion
  • Developing awareness and promoting mindfulness at all times
  • Those attending can take away key actions for personal growth

‘It is very brilliant as it enables young minds to participate and understand about Pratikraman and what it is. It has also allowed me to understand the reason for Pratikraman and has allowed me to also acknowledge small rituals that are sometimes forgotten. Very well explained by the adults and children……’ (A participant)

The teachers of SCVP Jain School London are grateful to SCVP Kenya who originally developed the Pratikraman in English with the blessings of Pujya Acharya Shri Chandanaji and under the guidance of Sadhvi Shri Shilapiji Maharaj.
